biohazard butterfly
Description
The Biohazard Butterfly is an unusual artefact with a shimmering past. Originally, it was sighted in the women’s restroom of the c-base, where it discreetly dealt with biological waste. Unlike its close relative, the Symbiont, however, the Butterfly lacks the ability to convert this waste into energy. Instead, it focuses on neutralization, decomposition, and redirection of material flows.
Functionality
At first glance, the artefact resembles an oversized, metallically gleaming butterfly. Its wings serve not only for movement but also as chemical membranes capable of binding odors and breaking down liquids into harmless components. The antennae of the Biohazard Butterfly react to biological signatures and guide the being directly to areas in need of cleaning and neutralization.
The ability for energy conversion is missing – but precisely for this reason, the artefact one day set out toward Terra. According to reports, it searched for ways to retrofit its systems there, perhaps through symbiosis with terrestrial insects or by learning new biotechnological tricks.
Historical Context
The Biohazard Butterfly is a product of the early experiments with half-biological, half-mechanical helpers within the station. While the Symbiont was successfully integrated as a reactor amplifier, the Butterfly remained somewhat of an oddball: useful, aesthetically fascinating, yet incomplete.
Its disappearance from the restroom was long debated. Some members claimed it simply fluttered away, while others saw it as a deliberate mission of the station, sending it to Terra for “retrofitting.” There are rumors that it appears in urban sewage systems, taking samples and expanding its knowledge.
Significance
Even without full energy conversion, the Biohazard Butterfly has its place in the mythology of the c-base. It serves as a reminder that not all experiments succeed immediately, and that some artefacts write their own developmental story.
Whether it will one day return – with recharged wings and the long-awaited ability to transform waste into energy – remains uncertain. Until then, its legend lives on: half butterfly, half station, wholly artefact.
